Online Teaching Opportunities

Teaching online is the not the same experience as teaching in front of classroom full of students. Teachers must accept a more detached experience in teaching without any face-to-face interaction. There is no live discussion that can take place, and this lack of back-and-forth is not for everyone considering a teaching profession. But for those who enjoy the freedom that comes with virtual instruction with student from all over the country – or beyond – then teaching online can be a marvelous experience.

Teaching Qualifications

To teach online a teacher is generally expected to meet the same requirements of traditional classroom teachers. For teaching at high school level the teacher will need a bachelor’s degree as well as a teaching license. As is customary at the community college level, teaching online requires a master’s degree; and finally, if you expect to teach at the top colleges online you will be required to have a doctorate degree in your field.

Should you seek a more adjunct online teaching position you may not be required to meet the same requirements as full time professors. If you have specialized skills or professional credentials in certain fields you may also qualify to teach your subject area online.

Regardless of your level of qualifications, if you expect to teach online you will need to have skills at working on the Internet with content management systems and other online programs that assist in making online education function properly. Any prior experience teaching or designing instruction for online courses is also a plus.

Advantages of Teaching Online

The obvious first advantage to teaching onlineis the option to teach from anywhere you can get an Internet connection. You can even work for renowned institutions in other states if they hire you and you will not need to relocate to meet the requirements of your new position. Also, in most cases online teachers can set their own work hours make arrangements with students to meet their time commitments and desires. And for those who enjoy working with those from all over the country they will get to interact with those from across the U.S.

Disadvantages of Teaching Online

Teachers quite often enjoy working with their own curriculum that they have helped form or tweaked to meet their particular teaching style. With online teaching quite often the curriculum is pre-made and with much less flexibility in how it is presented. Also, teaching online is done without the live interaction of students, thus causing the teacher (and students) to feel isolated, much unlike the live experiences prior teaching experience have provided. Many teachers enjoy interacting with students, peers and faculty members. Plus, should you be an adjunct online teacher you may be less valued gaining less respect, and definitely you will earn less than your fulltime counterparts.

Finding Online Teaching Opportunities

Most learning institutions will fill their online teaching positions from current faculty members. However there are others that post job descriptions hoping to find outside instructors interested in only teaching online. When doing a search for online positions you may want to try some of the following search terms: “distance learning,” “online teaching opportunities,” “online instructor,” “online teacher,” or “online adjunct teacher.”
